The New York Times broke the headline with the story that 104 players tested positive for using performance-enhancing drugs as a part of a screening process in 2003, several years ago. The test results were meant to be anonymous though that didn’t happen at all.
According to a New York Times report, those who tested positive were Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, David Ortiz, Sammy Sosa, and Barry Bonds. David Ortiz, nicknamed “Big Papi” is a Dominican American former professional baseball hitter.
David Ortiz was one of the most popular baseball hitters of his time but was unfortunately caught as a suspect in PED tests. The test results have grown more and more intense over time.
However, the Boston Red Sox Slugger (American Professional Baseball team) has always denied the fact of using steroids despite the New York Times report. The New York Times 2009 reported that David Ortiz was included in the baseball’s Mitchell Report for testing positive for PEDs.
Ortiz appeared on WEEI sports radio in Boston. In his interview, David said that his tests were revealed because too many Yankees players were being tested positive. The New York Times didn’t like that, so they leaked a Red Sox player. David was pointing towards a regional bias.
“What was the actual reason behind for them to come out with something like that? To be honest, I can only think of the reason, a lot of guys from Yankees were being caught, and no one from Boston…
This was something leaked out from the New York Times and they had eventually no explanation for it… every single person who was caught was told what they bought, what they used, everything.
But nobody came to me after and before. Nobody came to me ever, to tell me that I was tested positive for any kind of steroids.”
David Ortiz had completed 13 seasons under MLB’s Joint Drug Agreement (Major League Baseball) and had not failed a test. Not for once.
At that time, about 52 players had been suspended for PEDs. Five players had nailed twice and one had been caught three times.
It was stated that there were certainly issues with the Mitchell Reports. Yet, there were almost 87 people listed in connection with PEDs, as said in the reports but none of them were David Ortiz.
By then, David had completed over 13 years without any positive signs for steroids or being caught up in scandals like Biogenesis. No any former players came out and said they observed any illegal activities associated with Ortiz.
No opponents even hint about it. All this is factual evidence that David Ortiz is clean. In a 2003 test via Players Tribune, Ortiz said:
“Let me tell you something. Say whatever you want about me – ‘love me’, ‘hate me’. I am no bull—er. I never took steroids on purpose. If I were tested for anything, it was for something in pills I bought from the damn mall. If you think that ruins everything I have done in this game. There is nothing I can say to convince you differently.”
